That ideology is insupportable due to the amount of research and data proving that making our economy slightly more environmentally friendly would, in fact, benefit our economy. If we voluntary changed our individual lifestyles and if the government implemented mandatory greenhouse gas emission caps, our society would have a more sustainable economy and we would inevitably save money. Those that fear a greener economy tend to believe that by moving away from fossil fuels and decreasing our dependence on oil will hurt the job market and lead to a recession. Oil companies hope that our dependence on oil will continue because of the profit they make from drilling and selling the resource. Also, some fear that with the transition to renewable resources, the auto industry will suffer a decrease in jobs and lose money. However, there is money to be made by investing in renewable resources with producing and selling the energy. It will in actuality expand the job market and increase the middle class. The economy would have just as many jobs while giving businesses and entrepreneurs the chance to cash in on some of the new greener opportunities.

Instead of companies processing oil and making plastic, they can build and maintain windmills. In fact, with the rapid growth in the wind industry, companies such as Enel North America Inc., which is the leading owner and operator of renewable energy projects in the US, are having trouble finding trained technicians to assemble windmills. With this growing demand, it opens up an entirely new job market with new financial opportunities.

The exotic technology of a hybrid vehicle is gradually improving and the popularity of alternative energy transportation is on the rise. It would be economically feasible to invest in renewable technology production and would secure the US’s position as an energy leader.

We are running out of nonrenewable energy. It’s a fact that fossil fuels will not be in supply forever. The glory days of cheap oil are coming to a fast end and the need for mass production of renewable energy is inevitable.

Scientists Issue Bali Climate Change Warning

More than 200 leading climate scientists have warned the United Nations Climate Conference of the need to act immediately to cut greenhouse gas emissions, with a window of only 10-15 years for global emissions to peak and decline, and a goal of at least a 50 per cent reduction by 2050.

The roll-call of top climate researchers includes five University of East Anglia scientists: Prof Corinne Le Quéré (also of the British Antarctic Survey), Prof Andrew Watson, Dr Dorothee Bakker, Dr Erik Buitenhuis and Dr Nathan Gillett.

The signatories warn that if immediate action is not taken, many millions of people will be at risk from extreme events such as heat waves, drought, floods and storms, with coasts and cities threatened by rising sea levels, and many ecosystems, plants and animal species in serious danger of extinction.

The researchers, who include many of the world's most acclaimed climate scientists, have issued the 'Bali Climate Declaration by Scientists' in which they call on government negotiators from the 180 nations represented at the meeting to recognize the urgency of taking action now. They say the world may have as little as 10 years to start reversing the global rise in emissions.

Prof Le Quéré said: "Climate change is unfolding very fast. There is only one option to limit the damages: stabilise the concentration of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
"There is no time to waste. I urge the negotiators in Bali to stand up to the challenge and set strong binding targets for the benefit of the world population."
Advertisements

The Bali Declaration emphasises the current scientific consensus that long-term greenhouse gas concentrations need to be stabilised at a level well below 450ppm CO2e (450 parts per million measured in carbon dioxide equivalent).
Building on the urgency of the recent Synthesis Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released on 17 November in Valencia, Spain, the declaration calls on governments to reduce emissions "by at least 50 per cent below their 1990 levels by the year 2050".
